This
is Kudawella Jayawickrama Maha Vidyalaya in
southern Sri Lanka.
The new school building was opened in January 2007. It was built by a Japanese
corporation and there are 6 buildings each named after a place in Japan.
This is where the children
from Kudawella Village come to learn. They are aged between 5 and 16
years old.
Staff at Kudawella
Mr A. H. Gunasena is the Principle of Kudawella school.
Here are just some
of the teaching staff.
Classrooms and facilities
Kudawella classrooms are
big, airy and a nice place to learn in. There are dedicated rooms for
teaching English, a
main assembly hall and a large sports hall. The school has a library where the children can
access resources and information.
The children have there ICT
lessons in the new computer room where they can access the internet
and use the webcam. Each classroom has a shrine to Buddha where
offerings are made each day. Outside there is a play area and equipment for the
children to use during lunch break.
Typical School Day
A typical school day at
Kudawella starts at 7.30 am with a school assembly and each day there is
a different theme. There are 7 lessons a day, each one is 40 minutes
long, and the bell rings to tell staff and pupils when to change
lessons. The school day is split into having 4 lessons, then one 20 minute
break at 10.30am to have lunch, followed by 3 lessons before the
children go home at 1.30pm. The children walk to school and bring their
own lunches with them.
