How do we... make musical instruments?

Making Eastern Band Musical Instruments

This is the one of the biggest places for making musical instrument in Matara city.

Some musical instruments are made by leather. Some skins are taken from animals (bulls, monkeys like that.) Most of the musical instruments are made of tanned skin of the goats or cows.

This woman is preparing a "Kadippuwa". It use for playing thammattama.

Local woods are used for the instruments as well.

When the Tsunami struck Kudawella School it wiped out absolutely everything including the school's traditional eastern band's instruments and costumes. Nearly 3 years and 6 months later, Kudawella have been able to buy brand new instruments and material to make new costumes with the money that Gorseland donated and the BT Global Design Challenge prize winnings.

Samanthi Hewage, of Adopt Sri Lanka, accompanied teachers to one of the largest musical instruments makers in Matara City and they bought:

1 x Base Drum,   9 x Thammatam,    1 x Kombu,   2 x Decorated Horn,

3 x Daul,    2 x Cymbals,    3 x Udakki,    3 x Pantheru,   3 x Melodicas

And now you can see the children of Kudawella

playing those instruments!
